Back in the day, Electronic Medical Records were OK. They completed the task. After logging on, you would browse, type your notes, and possibly upload a few scans. That was all. Essentially a computerized filing cabinet practical but uninteresting.
It's a very different scenario now, and it happens quickly. Unexpectedly fast at times. A minute after placing your order, you could look at your screen and see that your bloodwork is already in the proper location. Without any calls or "Did they get it?" messages, prescriptions are sent directly to the pharmacy. Without looking for it, everyone sees the same current information.
You barely noticed how telehealth was incorporated. No need to switch between apps or log in again. You can enter the visit by clicking on a link. In certain configurations, the chat is even transcribed in real time. At first, it feels weird, but after a while, you realize that you've missed a significant portion of the after-hours charting.
The more intelligent algorithms are constantly looking for trends minor alterations in a patient's medical history that could later indicate problems. Often early, although not always perfect. Additionally, early intervention sometimes even before the patient is aware that something is amiss can make all the difference.
It's not simply about "going paperless" anymore. The EMR is now faster, smarter, and more integrated into the care itself. The methods that embrace that? They're ahead of the game already.
